Description
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide consisting of the amino acids glutamate, cysteine and glycine. It is the most important low-molecular-weight antioxidant in virtually all animal cells and is regarded in research literature as the master regulator of intracellular redox status. Structurally unusual is the gamma-bond between glutamate and cysteine, which makes the tripeptide resistant to normal enzymatic peptide degradation.
In research context, the mechanisms are multilayered. Glutathione functions as a direct reducing agent for reactive oxygen species, as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases and as a substrate for phase II detoxification enzymes (glutathione-S-transferases). The compound thus addresses multiple levels of the cellular redox system simultaneously. In preclinical studies, glutathione has been associated with effects on oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, hepatic detoxification and skin pigmentation pathways.
A particularity: the oral bioavailability of glutathione is low because the tripeptide is broken down in the gastrointestinal tract to its amino acid components. This makes parenteral application routes the primary option in research settings. In preclinical models, application is typically subcutaneous, intramuscular or intravenous.
In the anti-aging research context, the hypotheses are extensive: age-related reduction of intracellular GSH levels, correlation with mitochondrial dysfunction, and relationships to sirtuins and NAD+. This makes glutathione an important compound in longevity research setups.

Glutathione is an endogenous tripeptide and the most important low-molecular-weight antioxidant, which is why it is considered well tolerated per study reports.
Observed in research and user reports:
- Injection site: with the large vial sizes, mild redness, pressure or transient irritation at the injection site is the most common observation.
- Circulation: isolated reports of brief warmth or mild dizziness shortly after parenteral application.
- Pigment effects: through the documented effects on skin pigmentation pathways, a change in skin tone is possible with repeated application; this effect is described in the literature as reversible.
- No long-term data: robust human studies on longer-term high-dose parenteral use do not exist. The favorable profile rests on the physiological role, animal models and anecdotal experience.
