Description

HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein hormone naturally produced by the syncytiotrophoblast of the placenta during pregnancy. Structurally, HCG consists of an alpha and a beta subunit, the alpha subunit being identical to that of LH, FSH and TSH. The beta subunit gives HCG its specific biological activity.

In research literature, HCG is an established compound for studies on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPG axis). The central mechanism: HCG binds to the LH receptor in Leydig cells of the testes (or theca cells of the ovaries) and stimulates steroidogenesis there. In male models, this leads to increased testosterone synthesis; in female models, to stimulation of estrogen production.

In the research context of the HPG axis, HCG is particularly interesting because it mimics the natural LH signal but has a substantially longer half-life (approximately 24-36 hours versus a few hours for LH). This pharmacokinetic profile makes the compound a clinical research tool for studies that aim to model LH signaling over longer time spans.

A particularity: HCG is offered in two variants, a 5000iu unit (standard) and a 10000iu unit (for more extensive research setups). The choice of unit depends on the study design.

Risks & Safety

HCG is considered well characterized per study reports, but as a gonadotropin it intervenes directly in the hormone axis, which sets its risk profile apart from that of pure tissue peptides.

Observed in research and user reports:

  • Estrogenic effects: stimulation of steroidogenesis can increase testosterone production, part of which aromatizes to estradiol. The literature documents estrogen-mediated effects such as water retention or breast tissue irritation as a result.
  • Hormone axis intervention: continuous LH receptor stimulation can shift the endogenous regulation of the HPG axis in preclinical models. The long half-life pharmacokinetics amplify this effect.
  • Injection site: mild redness, pressure or transient irritation at the injection site is among the most common observations.
  • No long-term data: robust human studies on longer-term non-clinical use do not exist. The profile rests on clinical short-term data and animal models.
