Description

L-Carnitine is a quaternary ammonium derivative naturally occurring in animal tissues and established in research literature for decades as a central element of mitochondrial fatty acid transport. Structurally, L-Carnitine is not a peptide but a modified amino acid derivative; as an established metabolic compound, however, it belongs in the spectrum of research tools.

The research mechanism is clearly defined: L-Carnitine is an essential part of the carnitine acyltransferase system (CPT1 and CPT2), which transports long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane where they are fed into beta oxidation. Without adequate carnitine supply, this transport is limited, reducing fatty acid oxidation. In preclinical studies, effects on mitochondrial respiratory capacity and fatty acid utilization have been documented.

L-Carnitine is synthesized endogenously from lysine and methionine but is a limiting factor in many research models. Exogenous provision in preclinical setups allows studies on fatty acid oxidation kinetics, mitochondrial bioenergetics and metabolic flexibility.

In research setups, L-Carnitine is particularly interesting in combination with other metabolic compounds, as the mechanism is clearly defined and can be well-distinguished from other pathways.
